The Difference Between a Thai Massage and a Western Massage
Choosing between a Thai massage and a Western massage can feel confusing when you are simply looking for a way to relax. The two styles come from very different traditions, use different techniques, and leave customers feeling refreshed in different ways.
This guide breaks down what sets them apart so you can pick the right treatment for your body and your goals.
What Is a Western Massage?
Western massage refers to the family of techniques that developed in Europe and North America, most notably Swedish massage. It relies on oil, long gliding strokes, kneading, and circular hand movements applied directly to the skin. The pace is typically slow and rhythmic, and the pressure ranges from light to moderate depending on the technique.
Because Western massage is performed with oil, customers usually undress to their comfort level and are draped with a sheet or towel throughout the session, with only the area being worked on exposed at any time.
At Sabai Thai Spa, our Flow Massage is our take on this style. It is a curated oil massage that blends Swedish and therapeutic techniques to help the body and mind unwind. It is available in 50 minute or 80 minute sessions and pairs well with our Aromatherapy Oil Enhancement for an even more calming experience.
What Is a Thai Massage?
Thai massage takes a completely different approach. It is a traditional therapy that originated in Thailand and combines acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga postures, which is why it is often described as “yoga massage.”
Rather than gliding oil strokes, a Thai massage practitioner uses targeted pressure point work along with stretching, pulling, and rocking techniques to move energy through the body and release tension from tight muscle groups.
Thai massage is performed without oil, and customers remain fully clothed throughout the session. Comfortable, loose fitting clothing is recommended, and Sabai Thai Spa can also provide Thai massage attire upon request.
Our Thai Massage service is available in 50 minute or 80 minute sessions and is offered at all of our locations.

- Relief from headaches and back pain
- Reduced joint stiffness
- Increased flexibility and range of motion
- Eased anxiety
- Revived energy and improved circulation
Western style Flow Massage is well suited to customers looking for:
- Boosted blood and lymph flow
- Deep skin hydration
- A calming, decongesting, and uplifting experience
- Increased joint flexibility
- A more passive, deeply relaxing session
Both services are non-RMT and cannot be claimed with insurance, and neither can be performed on customers who are or may be pregnant.
If you are managing a specific injury or chronic pain and want a treatment that can be claimed with insurance, our Registered Massage Therapy service may be a better fit.
Which One Should You Choose?
If you want to stay clothed, enjoy an active session that improves flexibility, and target tension through pressure points and stretching, Thai massage is likely the better choice. If you prefer a slower, oil based session where you can fully relax without any movement required on your part, Western style Flow Massage will feel more familiar and restorative.
Many of our customers alternate between the two depending on how they are feeling that week, and some choose to try Fusion Massage, which combines our signature oil massage with assisted stretching for the best of both worlds.
